SAN is short for Storage Area Network. It is the ability to share a single 'group of disks' - 'data' to many computers across the network through high speed fibre network. This is achieved through a combination of hardware and software products that are available at CEG for different levels of budget needs.
What is NAS? NAS is short for Network Attached Storage. It is the ability to share files to many computers through an Ethernet network by using standard network protocols. A single all-in-one solution is available at CEG that has the ability to load-balance, do fail-overs and virtually cluster with many NAS units.
DAS is short for Direct Attached Storage. It is when a computer is attached to an external storage through an interface. Such interface can be through a Host Bus Adapter such as Fiber, SCSI, Network Interface or through USB or Firewire. There is no intelligence of any sharing involved. At CEG we provide many DAS products from low to high-end.
iSCSI is short for Internet SCSI. It is the method of using SCSI command through Ethernet network to provide connection between a computer and an external storage. It eliminates the need for the 50-pin or 68-pin type SCSI plugs but rather use the common RJ-45 Network interface to provide a DAS connectivity. It can also be used to make a SAN to share data in an iSCSI enclosure(s) to multiple systems in the network. iSCSI helps also to eliminate the distance limitation of the conventional SCSI connectivity at much lower costs.
